MARCHE- LE MARCHE AN EXCITING LESSER KNOWN REGION OF ITALY

Coast Line of Le Marche

Food Wine Cook introduces you to a lesser known region of Italy, Le Marche or Marche whichever you prefer. It has gained popularity with foreign tourists, particularly European, in the last decade. Le Marche with all it has to offer, resort towns, beautiful beaches, rugged scenery, quaint towns, art and history and excellent food, wine, some of which are only available locally, will not remain unknown outside of Italy much longer.

Le Marche is centrally located with the Adriatic Sea on the east and the region of Umbria with the Appenine Mountains to the west. It is bordered on the north by Emilia Romagna and San Marino and on the south by Abruzzi. Marche consists of rugged and mountain0ous remote areas that gently roll to the sea where the majority of the population live. The coast of Le Marche has beautiful beaches that the Italians have been enjoying them for years, and are recently becoming popular to foreigners. They also are aware these beaches are great for sun bathing and only for hearty swimmers.

We would be remiss if we didn’t mention some of the 13  wines from this region that carry the DOC designation. Many of these wines are little known outside of Italy,  so the visitors to this area are in for a real treat when they drink the local wine. Some of the wines from indigenous vines in the Marches are Bianco dei Colli Maceratesi, Verdicchio di Matelica, Esino Bianco, Sangiovese dei Colli Pesaresi, Rosso Piceno, Rosso Conero. A few of the other wines produced are Montepulciano d’ Abruzzo, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo, Pino nero and bianco, Trebbiano. Without a doubt, Verdicchio is my favorite to pair with crustaceans. We will expand on the wines in future blogs concentrating on the Le Marche region of Italy. Recipes at Food Wine Italian.
