St Patrick’s Day has come and gone and I have had my fill of Corned Beef and Cabbage and I truly enjoyed the refreshing Guinness Draught beer with the surprise widget in the bottle. Now it is time to get back to my passion, Italian food and wine. Although my food and wine pleasures extend to other countries as well, let me say something about Italian wines.
If you travel throughout Italy, as I have had the pleasure to do, you encounter wine makers who still believe in the old-time values of “soil, sunshine and soul”. This is not because they lack the technology, know-how, or equipment to make wines that meet the new global tastes. Italy’s wine industry has been revolutionized. My friends at the Italian Trade Commission reinforce my thoughts on this.
Italians have always taken pride in handcrafting their wine to be unique to their individual vineyard. Italy has many wine producers who never think of marketing their wine beyond their paese. I have a wine making cousin Primo, who lives in the small mountain town of Farfanaro, outside of the city of Parma. He has a small vineyard that produces a great Lambrusco with a bit of fizz, dry and fruity. Betty and I have had the pleasure of enjoying it on several visits. Unfortunately it is only for local consumption.
Yes, Italy produces great local wines, yet it is the world leader in wine exports with a wealth of esoteric wines still to be discovered. Fortunately, I have had the pleasure of participating in many wine tasting events. Thanks to the Italian Trade Commission I have participated in their sponsored wine tasting events that have been very informative and have increased my pleasure and knowledge of Italian wine. At these events there are many Italian Wine producers who get to showcase undiscovered wines from arcane vineyards.I have found their wines, for the most part, to be excellent and they just need to be promoted and marketed in the United States to reach the public.
We will be expanding on Italian wine and food. For more information now, go to foodwinecookitalian.com.
