If you are sightseeing inTuscany Italy during July and August,   want to chill out on the beach, with great food and wine; head for Viareggio which is one of Tuscany’s most famous and traditional seaside resorts. Go and enjoy the wide endless beaches, the fantastic cuisine and the exciting night-life with its well known “Versilian” discos and see for yourself what makes Viareggio a favorite holiday resort. Here you will meet young, stylish Italians (New York clubbers beware) and enjoy the seafood specialties of Tuscany. For those of you, like me, who cannot spend the entire day on the beach, you can explore the hills behind Viareggio and visit the medieval villages. Take a bus to Pietrasanta one of the medieval villages and visit the marble workshop. The coolest thing we discovered was the Carrara Cave where Michelangelo got the marble for the statue of David. If this isn’t awesome, what is? Like sailing? Not far from Viareggio you can go sailing at a sailing school at Torre del Lago.

A large part of the night life is enjoying the Tuscan wines. Three of Italy’s most important red wines, Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano come from Tuscany and are DOCG Wines. However, with our Fruitti di Mare we enjoyed Vernaccia di San Gimignano, an excellent Tuscan white wine . All of Viareggio’s seafood dishes are incredible and there is no better place to enjoy them with a white from the area such as Colli di Luni. With dessert we imbibed in the exquisite Vin Santo which is the pride of Tuscan winemakers. Vin Santo is a sweet wine which my wife, Betty, enjoyed immensely. Many people enjoy it as an aperitif.
